The national Maritime Digital Supply Chain development project kick-off was held in Turku archipelago 17.-18.8.2017.
The vivid and enthusiastic discussions of more than 30 key business digitalization experts strengthened the understanding that the digitalization interests of the maritime industry are very similar to those of process industry. The corresponding Process Industry Digital Supply Chain development project started nearly one year ago and now both projects are targeting to the common goal – to create a common Digital Business Ecosystem for industry (DBE Core).
Building a cargo ship or a pulp mill means multilateral business information exchange far beyond commercial details. Huge amount of technical information must be exchanged before the ship or mill can start operating. And that information exchange does not end at the end of the construction project. It will continue over the warranty periods to normal operation and maintenance. Effective basic operative quotation, catalog based buying and other order and delivery processes rely on smooth information flow. Also, there may be associated supplementary processes such as order financing or 3rd party services.
The biggest advantage of digitalizing business information lies in an opportunity to automate business processes. This requires commonly agreed standards and intercompany business processes. Multilateral intercompany processes require also business rules to manage these processes, as the DBE Core companies have perceived.
All the business parties must trust to the shared information. Without trust companies are not able to run automated business processes. And to get information shared means that companies must have capabilities to dispatch and receive information – get their backend systems integrated. Modern API technology flavored with blockchain and smart contracts helps solving the integration and trust challenges.
It was inspiring to see that now Finnish industry has really started to drive DBE Core concept. In addition to maritime and process industry driven development efforts also a logistics development project SmartLog is going on. DBE Core visions are coming true!
